The World Junior Championship started yesterday in Chennai, India. Representing Canada are Roman Sapozhnikov, the reigning Canadian Junior Champion and Shiyam Thavandiran a former 2 time winner. Both of these FIDE masters have lots of International experience, and are no doubt hoping for an IM norm to bring home. They are both ranked about 60th in the 125 player event.
Yesterday both won their first round games and have IM's on their plate for today. Shiyam is white against 22nd seed Babu Lilith (IND), while Roman is black against 27th seed Milos Roganovic (SRB).
The top 3 seeds are all GM's rated about 2630, and sport a 50 point rating lead over the rest of the field. They are Maxim Matlakov (RUS), Sanan Sjugirov (RUS) and Ivan Salgado Lopez (ESP). Matlakov was held to a draw in his 1st round game.
There are no Canadians at the World Girls Junior being held concurrently.
