2019 FIDE World Cup

September 10 - October 4, 2019

128 players from 47 countries compete in two-game knock-out matches for two places in the Candidates Tournament and a share of the $1,600,000 US prize fund. 

Top players are Ding Liren, Anish Giri, MVL, Wesley So, Nopomniachtchi, Aronian, Grischuk, Karjakin, Nakamura. Youngsters include 14-year-old Nodirbek Abdusattorov (UZB, 2608), 15-year-old Nihal Sarin (IND, 2610), and 16-year-old Alireza Firouzja (IRI, 2702). Former World Champions Vishy Anand and Vladimir Kramnik (retired) will not be playing. Fabiano Caruana is the only player to have already qualifed for the Candidates, and will not be playing in the World Cup.

2019 Canadian Champion GM Evgeny Bareev plays Rustam Kasimdzhanov in round 1; the winner probably plays Mamedyarov in round 2. Kasim was knocked out of the first round of the 2015 World Cup by Canadian GM Anton Kovalyov.
