GOTW: Talukdar - Barbosa, Philadelphia 2019

The 2019 Philadelphia International ran June 27- July 1 in downtown Philadelphia. This year attracted 13 GMs, only 4 of whom were from the host country. GM Alex Lenderman (USA) won with 7/9, 1/2 point ahead of eight players.

The Philadelphia International is a 9-round Swiss with plenty of international players, and so it is a regular stop for Canadians hoping to score FIDE Norms. This year, 13 Canadians played in the top section. None finished in the prize money, but FM Rohan Talukdar scored an IM Norm with 6/9 (+3 =6 -0), topped by a last-round win over GM Denes Boros. Alan Montalbo (BC) finished =7th in the Expert section, winning $300 US.

Our Canadian Game of the Week is FM Rohan Talukdar's fascinating 4th round game against Philippino GM Olivier Barbosa. They follow theory for 20 moves in a Caro-Kann when Rohan sacs a Bishop for two pawns. Black doesn't defend the best way, and the game goes to a RRB7 v RBBN5 ending... when Rohan sacs an exchange!
