The CFC Regular Chess Post – October 11/12 – Vancouver Open.

Ryan Lo, Jason Cao, and Jack Cheng won the 2012 Vancouver Open played this past weekend!

All went undefeated and ended up with 5pts/6 games. Interestingly enough, all three of them went head-to-head during the tournament, which resulted fittingly in their only drawn games.

The CFC Regular Chess Post – October 22/12 – GM-Elect Eric Hansen – To World Cup!

After 11 rounds at the Americas Continental Championship, played in Argentina, and just finished yesterday, GM-elect Eric Hansen of Alberta came tied for first ( 5-way ). This forced a 5-player round robin to determine who would be the four winners of a place at the 2013 World Cup. Eric came in the top four, and so will go to represent Canada. Congratulations Eric!!

The CFC Regular Chess Post ( Week of October 26 - November 1/12 )

The CFC Regular Chess Post – October 29/12 – Edmonton Fall Sectional.

IM Edward Porper wins Section A with 3 1/2 out of five. Three players scored 3 to share 2nd and 3rd: FM Aman Hambleton, IM Richard Wang and FM Vladimir Pechenkin.

In Section B, Peter Kalisvaart scored 4 1/2 to win first. Mike Zeggelaar was 2nd with 3 and David Miller 3rd with 2 1/2.

In Section C, Arnold McKay and Robert Davies tied for first with 3 1//2, with Brian Phillips third with 3.

International News Today - October 31, 2012

Hikaru N. won his final game to convincingly win the Unive Tournament and start to work his way back into the Top 10 rankings.

In St Petersburg, Anton Kovalyev is participating in the Chigorin Memorial. After 5 rounds he is tied for 9th with 4 points. Among those with 4 is top seed Alexei Shirov. Lesser known names of Demchenko and Shimanov are in 1st with perfect score.

International News Today - November 6, 2012

The Chigorin Memorial (St Petersburg, RUS) finished Sunday with Alexander Areshchenko (UKR) and Bartosz Socko (POL) finishing tied for 1st with 7.5 out of 9. Both won their last round games to emerge from a group of 8 tied for 1st going into the final round. Anton Kovalyov, found himself on board 5 in the last round and with a win, would have finished tied for 3rd. However, even with white pieces playing a super-GM is never easy and he lost to Armenian #2 Vladimir Akopian.

International News Today - Nov 11, 2012

After 3 rounds at the WYCC, Canada has 5 players with perfect scores: Harmony Zhu (GU8), Arhant Washimkar (U8), Nicka Kalaydina (GU16), Qiyu Zhou (GU12), and Richard Wang (U14). Play continues today.

Natalia Khoudgarian has her work cut out for her in Khanty-Mansiysk. Her opponent at the Women's World Championship is 4th seed Zhao Yue (CHN). Heavy favourites for this event would of course be defending champion Hou Yifan (CHN), Humpy Koneru (IND) and Anna Muzychuk (SLO).

Vassily Ivanchuk hold a half point lead at the half-point mark in the King's Tournament in Bucharest.
