International News Today - August 20, 2012

A six way tie for 1st at the Russian Championship resulted in a play-off win for Dmitry Andreikin (4/5). Karjakin took second and Svidler third. Natalia Pogonina won the concurrent Women's Championship.

Alexander Ipatov (Turkey) took the Gold medal on tie-break over Richard Rapport (Hungary) at the World Junior. Ipatov left the Ukraine several years ago and has fairly recently settled in Turkey. Rapport was in the news a few years ago as being the 5th youngest GM in history. Ding Liren (China) who was top ranked had to settle for bronze.

International News Today - August 23, 2012

IM Eric Hansen is finishing his Olympic preparation at the Isthmia International in Greece. The 93 player, 9 round A section has 12 players 2500+ including Iordachescu (2645) and Fedorchuk (2639). Round 7 is in progress - Eric has 4/6, having drawn his last 4 games all vs GM's.

GM Kevin Spraggett is playing in the Sants Open in Barcelona. There are over 300 players in the 10 round A section. After 6 rounds, Kevin with 5 is 1/2 point out of first. He was 3rd ranked behind Nisipeanu and Gajewski, with a total of 14 2500+ players. A good finish could put him back in the 2600 club.

International News Today - August 27, 2012

In what might be a record for Canada, two players finished =1st in strong International tournaments over the weekend.

IM Eric Hansen finished in a three way tie for first in the Isthmia tournament, achieving his 1st GM norm.

Meanwhile, GM Kevin Spraggett finished in a six way tie for first in the Sants tournament, and should go back over 2600 with his result.

The CFC Regular Chess Post – Sept. 9/12 – Canadian Olympiad Results.

Both of the Canadian teams ended up with finishes largely consistent with their ratings. The Open team ( Sambuev, Gerzhoy, Noritsyn, Hansen and Porper ) was ranked 53rd and finished 52nd. The Women’s team ( Khoudgarian, Peng, Botez, Lacau-Rodean and Orlova ) was ranked 59th and finished 64th.

International News Today - Sept 9, 2012

The Chess Olympiad finished earlier today in Istanbul. 

 

In the Open Section Armenia and Russia tied for 1st with Armenia taking the Gold medal on tie-break. Their team consisted of Levon Aronian, Sergei Movsesian, Vladimir Akopian, Gabriel Sargissian, and Tigran Petrosian. Ukraine finished one point behing and took Bronze.

 

Top individual performers (2800+) were Shak Mamedyarov (AZE), David Navara (CZE), Aronian, Radoslaw Wojtaszek (POL), Anton Fillipov (UZE), Teimour Radjabov (AZE), and Akopian.
