GOTW: 2017 World Cup - Rd1.1

Both Canadians won their opening round games at the 2017 World Cup in Tbilisi today: 

  • GM Anton Kovalyov slowly outplayed GM Varuzhan Akobian (USA) on the Black side of a QGA.
  • GM Bator Samubev sac'ed a pawn for central pressure, then another pawn for an attack to crush the #14 seed GM Wei Yi (China) in 24 moves to score by far the biggest upset of the day.

Both Canadians will advance to the second round if they score 1/2 point (or more) in round 1.2, September 4, 2017.
