As a small celebration of International Women's Day, here are three miniatures from Canada's three most successful women chess players: Nava Starr, Yuanling Yuan, and Qiyu Zhou.

WIM Nava Starr (Shterenberg) 

  • 8-time Canadian women's champion
  • most games played on Canadian Olympiad teams: 147 (6 more than Daniel Yanofsky)
  • Olympiad Gold medal on board 2 (1976) 
  • Olympiad Bronze medal on board 1 (1982)
  • Four of the 10 highest Canadian TPRs at the Olympiad

WIM Yuanling Yuan 

  • Standout performer on Canadian team at the 2014 and 2016 Olympiads
  • three of Canada's four highest-ever TPRs at the Olympiad, including #1: 2355 in 2016.
  • Originator of the "Chess in the Library" program.


WGM Qiyu Zhou

  • Canada's only (first?) Woman Grand Master (2017)
  • 2016 Canadian Women's Chess Champion 
  • two-time member of Canada's Women's Olympiad team
  • 2014 World Youth Chess Champion (U14 girls)
