Our Canadian Game of the Week is GM Eric Hansen's last round win over GM Ilya Smirin at the 2017 TATA Steel Challengers event, with annotations by GM Eric Hansen.
The 79th TATA Steel event took place in Wijk aan Zee, Jan 14-29, 2017.
It is the last of the long-running annual super tournament round-robins, and once again had a stellar field, including World Champion Magnus Carlsen, 2016 Challenger Sergey Karjakin, Lev Aronian, Anish Giri, and more. Wesley So continued his streak of phonomenal results and won with 9/13, ahead of Carlsen (8) and Adhiban, Aronian, and Wei Yi (7.5).
Canadian GM Eric Hansen played in the TATA Steel Challengers group. He finished 4th with 8/13 (+5 =6 -2), losing only to cowinning GMs Gawain Jones and Marcus Ragger (9/13). Jones defeated Raggar in their game, and so he advances to the Masters group for 2018.
Eric's result raised his FIDE rating 13 points to 2616.
Eric Hansen (Challengers) and Adhiban Baskaran (Masters) won the TATA Steel Vugar Gashimov Fair Play Award (see photo).
Eric participated in the streaming post-mortems more than anyone. You can find links to those here:

Our Canadian Game of the Week is GM Eric Hansen's last round win over GM Ilya Smirin (ISR).
Going into the round, Smirin was 1/2 a point behind the leaders, but had scored well-enough as Black to have hopes of winning this game and qualifying for the top section in 2018. A win would also be revenge for his 2014 loss to Eric at the Tromso Olympiad.
