8th Kitchener Chess Festival - Report

The Canadian Amateur and Senior Chess Championships took place in Kitchener from August 2 to August 5. It was a 7-round swiss tournament, divided in five sections : seniors open, amateur open, U2000, U1600 and U1200. They were fighting for a ~$3000 prize pool ($300-$200-$100 prizes for each amateur section). There were also two side-competitions for teams (teams of four, max 2/section) and family (teams of two).

The Senior Championship crowned three winners, tied at 5/7  :  Istvan Kiss, 1792, who scored 4,5 out of his last 5 games, William G. Doubleday, 2184, and Ralph Deline, 1831.

This year's Open section was quite strong, featuring six 2250+ players. Interesting fact : the top six only lost two games ! This high number of draws lead to a four-way tie at 4,5, for second place, half a point behind Konstantin Semianuk, clear winner.

"XuVeZhYe", lead by Jeffrey Xu, winner of the U1600 with 6/7, won the team tournament, at 19/28, only half a point ahead of Peredune's chess Academy (18,5).

The Li sisters (Catherine -U1200 winner- and Kristen) won the family prize with 11/14
