Chess.com Bullet Championship
April 3-7, 2019

Bullet chess -- 1 min per player, per game, no increment -- is one form of chess where online play clearly trumps the OTB experience: illegal moves are impossible, the clocks stop and start automatically, the pieces never get knocked over and always land on the middle of the square.

The Chess.com 2019 Bullet Championship has two 25-round open Swiss qualifiers and one 8-player 4xRR qualifier to join the five seeded players: Nakamura, MVL, Grischuk, Karjakin, and Aronian. Knock-out matches are 1 hour of bullet.

Note: the obvious missing player is Magnus Carlsen. He is playing in Shamkir that week, but, possibily more importantly:

  1. Carlsen seems to have chosen to boycott chess.com events after a server glitch cost him a game against Nakamura last year.
  2. Carlsen's "Play Magnus" company has merged with chess24, putting the World Champion in direct competition with chess.com.
  3. Magnus is hyper-competitive, and 2 may be related to 1 !?
