GOTW: Dukic - Qin, CUCC 2018

Our Canadian Game of the Week comes from the final round of the Canadian University Chess Championship, between Ottawa U's Zach Dukic and Waterloo's Joey Qin. The game is a very complicated Bg5 Najdorf, where White follows a line in the well-regarded repertoire books by Indian GM Parimarjan Negi, and gets an excellent attack...

To add drama off the board:

    • a win by White could have knocked Waterloo out of first overall.
    • Joey Qin was playing in his first event in a year -- his first since he had the best TPR in the previous CUCC!
    • Zach Dukic was both Ottawa board 2, and the lead organizer of the event.

The Canadian University Chess Championship took place at the University of Ottawa, January 12-14, 2018. It had the highest-ever turnout with 109 players. Congratulations and thanks to organizer Zach Dukic.

Waterloo A, with the highest-ever average rating (2400), won. Congratulations to IM Michael Song, Joey Qin, Diwen Shi, Tony Lin, and Yinshi Li

McGill A and U of T A tied for second, with McGill taking the medals thanks to a blitz tie-break win by Maroun Tomb.

Western B won the B group.
