Canada's Next IM: Shiyam Thavandiran!

FM Shiyam Thavandiran will be Canada's next International Master! At the 2017 Spice Cup Shiyam scored 5/9 -- including 2.5/6 against GMs -- to finish as top U2400 and gain enough rating points to push him over 2400.

2017 SPICE Cup

The SPICE Cup Open was a 9-round Swiss from October 21-26, 2017 in St. Louis. It had 61 players from 19 countries, with 21 GMs, 6 IMs, 13 FMs, and one WGM. Top seeds included GMs Lazaro Bruzon, Jorge Cori, Ray Robson, Aleksandr Shimanov, Dariusz Swiercz, Vasif Durarbayli, Yunieski Quesada, Samuel Sevian, Peter Prohaszka, Emilio Cordova, and Illia Nyzhnyk. GMs Bruzon, Quesada and Swiercz tied for first with 6.5/9.

Canadian FMs Victor Plotkin and  Shiyam Thavandiran played. Victor scored 4.5/9.

Shiyam scored 5/9 to finish as top U2400! More importantly, he gained enough FIDE rating points to push his lifetime rating over 2400. The result is his second strong performance this fall, after earning nearly 40 rating points at the 2017 US Masters this September in North Carolina. Combined with his three previous IM norms this means that Shiyam has fulfilled the requirements for FIDE's International Master title!

Our Game of the Week is FM Shiyam Thavandiran's win over Philippine GM Rogelio Barcenilla in the 8th round of the 2017 SPICE Cup Open. Shiyam's play in this game is an excellent advertisement for the Hedgehog: when White hangs back, so does Black, and when White sends his pieces to the kingside, Black gains a structural advantage on the queenside, and when White finally pushes his center pawns, Shiyam alertly breaks them apart and directs his minor pieces to the holes left behind.
