GOTW: Amateur vs Master!?

The 2017 Aurora Fall Open, October 14-15, ended with a three-way tie for first between IM Aman Hambleton, IM Nikolay Noritsyn, and Ottawa expert Sam Marin, each with 4/5. Special mention for Eugene Hua, who would have joined them after drawing Nikolay and Aman in the final two rounds, but he took a bye on Saturday's third round and finished with 3.5/5.

Other Winners:

  • U2000: Jeffrey Zhao 5/5
  • U1600: Sheng Tang 5/5
  • U1300: Lucy Gao 4.5/5
  • U900: Suseela Chinniah 4.5/5

Our GOTW is the final round board 1 game between Sam Marin and IM Nikolay Noritsyn. With a 495 point rating difference between them it would be reasonable to expect this would be an instructive Master vs Amateur game marked by either a serious tactical oversight or a series of positionally second-rate moves. Not this time! In this GOTW the amateur plays a lot of unambitious but good-enough moves, doesn't make any mistakes, and the experienced IM has to concede the draw. That's instructive too, just not the kind of instructive game we're used to seeing.
